Telling it Like it is

About

Susan Bauer This project is dedicated to my dad. In retrospect, this is the accumulation of a journey between a father and daughter, seemingly intent and destined to reach your doorstep. It is because of my father’s appreciation and delight in receiving homemade cards, that inspired a lifetime of poetry from early childhood. It was an exhilarating feeling to know I was able to bring him so much joy.

I can remember asking what
You wanted for your birthday
“Just something HOMEMADE”
You would always say.
You’re sixty now, and loving you
Has never been hard
And my gift to you is this
This HOMEMADE card.

Many Reasons
(written for my dad’s 60th birthday)

There are many reasons
I love you so
I’d like to share them
And let you know

Even though you raised
A family of eight
You made each of us special
It just felt great

I remember playing basketball
In our backyard
Spending hours teaching me
Moves as forward and guard

And how you meticulously painted
Our basketball court
To this day it’s still
My favorite sport

I laugh when I think
Of us all camping outside
The bugs would come out
And you would hide

I can still see our trailer
With words so clear
People knew who we were

From the front and the rear
Your respect for women
I particularly admire
And watching you spoil mom
To her heart’s desire

Remember the “Vote For Women”
Sign that you made?
I felt so important wearing
It in the parade

Having my picture in the paper
Was an added delight
You made a little girl so happy
Going to bed that night

And loving children has always
Been so natural for you
The grandchildren sure love you
And all that you do

The thing I remember
Most important of all
Are the words you would ask
And I’d feel ten feet tall

“Who loves you, honey?”
You would ask day to day
“Daddy Does,” I’d reply
Knowing just what to say

“Why does Daddy love you?”
Would follow right after
“Because I’m me” I’d reply
With delighted laughter

Finally I’d like to mention
How my poem writing began
You are the instigator
Of the entire plan

I can remember asking what
You wanted for your birthday
“Just something “Homemade”
Is what you would say

You’re sixty now, and loving you
Has never been hard
My gift to you, will be the best
Which is my HOMEMADE Card.
